Overwhelming second-half firepower saw a stubborn Swinford side ousted in the Division 2 final by a Deirdre Doherty-inspired Charlestown this afternoon.

While the former Mayo player was the best on display with 2-8 (5 frees), Doherty had plenty of help from her teammates who contributed 2-10 from seven different scorers.

With the aid of the wind, Charlestown dismissed Swinford 2-11 to 1-2 in the second half.

However, the going was far from easy for the girls in green, who, despite a goal after 25 seconds from Nicole McLoughlin, found themselves 1-3 to 1-1 behind after six minutes - Mayo panellist Caitlin Henry got the goal for Swinford.

It wasn't until the 22nd minute that Charlestown finally levelled matters through Ella Brennan, who played almost the entire game with a fractured hand.

Despite trailing 1-5 1-7 at half-time, Swinford levelled again in the 35th minute with a goal from Briana Fallon.

However, the team in black and red only added two more points as they were steamrolled by their neighbours, who added three second-half goals through Nicole McLoughlin Deirdre Doherty (2) to prevail by twenty points in the end.

A full report, plus reaction from Charlestown's Ella Brennan, will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News Sport.
