Just hours after helping coach Ballina Stehenites to victory in the senior championship clash with Mayo Geals, Cora Staunton laced her boots for yet another season with Carnacon before striking a hat-trick against Castlebar Mitchels in their Division 1 League Shield semi-final on Sunday.
Staunton’s side got the better of Mitchels on a score 7-4 to 1-12, with the legendary forward raising her third green flag by blasting in a free from roughly 20 yards out. They will now face Sinéad and Lisa Cafferky’s Kilmovee Shamrocks side in the shield final this Sunday.
Under the new management of Danny O’Toole, Carnacon are set to have the 42-year-old Staunton back on board for their upcoming senior championship campaign.
Since last playing for Mayo in 2017, Staunton has enjoyed a successful career in the AFLW and as an RTÉ analyst. She is also a forwards coach with the Ballina Stephenites senior men’s team.
Current Mayo senior footballer Fiona McHale has also returned to training with Carnacon, while former Mayo footballer Doireann Hughes is set to commence training with Carnacon shortly.
Hughes, who had been working as a hospital doctor in Edinburgh, previously told The Mayo News that she was planning to return home to work in Ireland at the end of summer. She did not feature for Carnacon in last year’s championship.
Her return will come as a major boost to the twenty-one-time county champions, who suffered a heavy defeat to Westport in last year’s senior semi-final.
They have been drawn in a tough championship alongside Westport, Kilmovee Shamrocks and Hollymount.
