SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP GROUP 2

Mayo Gaels 0-9

Ballina Stephenites 0-20

MAYO ABBEY

REIGNING champions Ballina Stephenites began their campaign with a comfortable win on Saturday afternoon. The Moysiders were clear and deserving victors in front of a big crowd in Mayo Abbey and looked formidable at times during the second half. Mayo Gaels were gallant hosts and were hugely competitive for the first 25 minutes before a Stephenites surge before half-time opened a four-point gap and Niall Heffernan's men never looked back.

Mikey Murray, Liam Golden, Evan Regan, Frank Irwin, Brendan Collins and Luke Jordan were prominent for Ballina in the opening half while Adam Gallagher, Ethan Henry and John Gallagher were among the best for the hosts.

Paul McGarry rang the changes at half time and Jack Fallon made an immediate impression with a Mayo Gaels point in the opening moments of the new half, however, the Stephenites were in no mood to be reeled in and they powered clear.

The Green and Red were 0-14 to 0-6 clear after 50 minutes when James Jennings landed a superb point for the Gaels, before another Stephenites surge yielded points from Niall Feeney, Luke Feeney, Regan, Frank Irwin and David Tighe to seal the deal for the champions.
