Mayo GAA Vice-Chairman Con Moynihan has said the county board will conduct a review with the Mayo senior team management in the next month
A senior Mayo GAA official has declined to comment on whether county board officials are in favour of changes to Kevin McStay’s backroom team.
Speaking to The Mayo News yesterday (Monday), Mayo GAA Vice-Chairman, Con Moynihan, said he had ‘no comment’ to make on a report claiming that county board officials were seeking changes to the Mayo senior team setup.
On Sunday, the Irish Examiner reported that ‘a number of key county board officials feel alterations are required’ before McStay could be endorsed for 2025.
McStay is half-way through a four-year term agreed after his ratification as Mayo senior team manager in August 2022.
“I have no comment to make. I don’t know where that came from. I’m totally surprised at it,” said Moynihan.
The Ballaghaderreen clubman said that the review of the Mayo senior football team’s 2024 season would ‘definitely’ take place between the county board and McStay within the next month.
His backroom team includes assistant manager Stephen Rochford from Crossmolina, former Crossmolina player and Belmullet manager Damien Mulligan, Kerry native Donie Buckely and Joe Canney from Corofin.
Canney, who played under Rochford during his time as Corofin manager, replaced Liam McHale last year after he stepped down after one season.
Speaking about his departure from the Mayo setup, McHale said: “There were five of us there and the four lads had a totally different philosophy on how this team should play than what I had.”
Mayo won the FBD Championship and the Division 1 title in McStay’s first year in charge but failed to win any silverware in the 2024 season - which ended at the preliminary quarter-final stage following a penalty shootout against Derry.
Speaking at the July county board meeting, Garrymore delegate John Farragher had ‘got it in the neck’ from supporters who were unhappy with Mayo’s style of play.
In response to calls for ‘an open discussion’ with delegates prior to the review of the senior team’s season, Moynihan said: “There is always an exchange of views. We have to ask the hard questions. There’s no point in going into it if you’re not going to ask those questions.”
