In Claremorris

THOSE who attended the South Mayo U-16 A final were treated to an exhibition of attacking football where the excitement was dampened only by the lead Claremorris built up from the second quarter onwards.

Jack Comer kicked 2-10 for the winners in an earth-scorching, scintillating contest that was a showcase for the standard of football in South Mayo.

A game and gallant Ballinrobe team began with a bang, leading 1-3 to 0-0 after eight minutes with their colossal midfielder Barry Langan banging in the goal.

Claremorris then turned the screw, got the ball pumping into Comer, and off they went.

Mikey Rabbitte got one-third of his hat-trick before half-time when the hosts led 1-8 to 1-5.

We went from a wrestling match to an all-out royal rumble in the second half as Claremorris soared ahead with Comer raising two green flags, as did Mikey Rabbitte and Eoghan O'Hare (1).

Ballinrobe played some brilliant football, with David Stan and Barry Langan both striking the net. But the chasers only got within five points of the victors, who pulled off into the sunset for a deserved win.
