A cruel irony has taken place for Mayo as a horse named 'Mayo For Sam' ran at Ballinrobe and lost following Derry's win over Mayo on Saturday in the GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship.

After Mayo's agonising defeat on penalties to Derry, the bad luck carried onto the race track where a horse named Mayo For Sam rode by Jockey Adam Caffrey lost out by a narrow margin.

Mayo For Sam looked to be the winner up the home straight in the GAIN The Advantage Series Handicap but was headed on the line by the Denise Foster trained Desert Friend.

A number of the Mayo GAA senior football team were in attendance at Ballinrobe on Monday evening, where the annual Ladies Day competition also took place. The winner of the Ladies Day crown was Bernie Donnelly from Roscommon town.
