Gaelic Masters Association Championship Round 4

Mayo 1-10 Galway 1-6

In Swinford

A convincing victory over their local rivals marked a second win in three championship game for the Mayo Masters in Swinford Amenity Park this evening.

A late Galway goal took the gloss off an impressive win for Mayo, who fielded a strong team against Galway in to emerge as convincing winners in this encounter.

Even against a stiff first-half, Mayo played a smooth, efficient game with the possession and were dogged and ruthless without the ball.

Galway's misfiring forwards were given little quarter by an impressive Mayo full-back line on a night where they kicked more wides than points.

An eighth-minute goal from Jarlath McDonagh had Pat O'Neill's side 1-2 to 0-0 ahead and set the tone for a solid Mayo performance.

The hosts kept the Tribesmen at arms' length throughout the game and pushed well ahead when Brian Lynskey, Alan Moran, Jimmy Killeen (2, 1 '45) and Paul McDonagh pointed without reply in the second half.

Galway were denied a goal by three outstanding reflex saves from Mayo goalie Kieran O'Malley, who was eventually beaten in the depths of injury time when Mark Henry finished a consolation goal for the Tribesmen.

Mayo face Limerick on Saturday, July 6 in the next round of the championship.

A full report, plus reaction from Mayo manager Pat O'Neill, will be carried in Tuesday's Mayo News.
