In Ballyhaunis

A squad loaded with talent and a second-half breeze were the key ingredients in the Mayo Minor girls’ victory over a plucky Roscommon in Ballyhaunis this evening.

Brian McLoughlin’s Mayo produced a second half that turned a one-point lead into a twelve-point win to kick-start their Connacht campaign in style

Roscommon were lively, defiant and threatening in the first half, but were held to a single point by hosts that had impressive performers all over the field.

The going was far from easy for Mayo in the first half. The local lassies were against a breeze and were made to work for every score, but still played some fine football.

Roscommon put Mayo to the pin of their collar when Lucy Sheffield finished a fine goal in the 22nd minute.

Their one-point lead last less than 60 seconds. From the next play, Bree Hession (who kicked four points) angled a ball into the unmarked Christina McEvilly, who buried it in the net.

Their 1-7 to 1-6 half-time lead was far from comfortable, but Mayo slowly cruised back into the lead.

A goal from Suzanne Tuohy – who excelled at midfield alongside the superb Sarah Carney – set Mayo on a path to victory on which they took no backwards step.

Hession and Kayla Doherty led the way on the scoresheet with thirteen points as Mayo ruled the roost for the rest of the game.

There will be a full report plus reaction from Mayo manager Brian McLoughlin in Tuesday’s Mayo News.
