Minister Calleary confirmed today (Tuesday, June 9) that a significant upgrade of the water mains is set to begin in the coming days.

Minister Dara Calleary has today confirmed that a significant upgrade of water mains in Ballina is set to get underway in the coming days.

The Ballina-based minister stated that more than 1.1km of water mains will be replaced along McDermott Street, which he says will deliver ‘a stronger, more reliable water network for local homes and businesses.’

“This €3 million investment will future-proof Ballina’s water infrastructure, ensuring the town is well-positioned to grow, attract investment, and assist in unlocking new housing development and support economic growth,” Minister Calleary said.

He also acknowledged the work of the Uisce Éireann team and Minister James Browne in advancing the project.

“Phase one of the project, which saw 250 metres of water main replaced from Ballina Reservoir to the junction with Slí Ectra, was completed at the end of last year. Crews will now continue along McDermott Street, progressing down towards the town centre to the junction with Teeling Street,” he said.

While some traffic disruption is expected during the works, Minister Calleary stated that sections of the project will be carried out at night to help minimise the impact on motorists and local businesses.

Work phases:

Phase one: Ballina Reservoir to Slí Ectra – completed.

Phase two: Slí Ectra to Fenian Row – daytime lane closure between Fenian Row and Slí Ectra. Traffic approaching McDermott Street will be restricted to a right turn only at Fenian Row. Works are due to commence on 15 June and continue for approximately two weeks.

Phase three: Fenian Row to Mercy Road – road closure from 29 June to 21 August. Diversions will be in place via Fenian Row, Lord Edward Street and Mercy Road.

Phase four: Mercy Road to Convent Hill – two weeks of night-time works commencing in August, with lane closures in operation.

Phase five: Convent Hill to Teeling Street – daytime works commencing in September and continuing for approximately five weeks, with lane closures in place.
