Hyland rules out Dáil run but plots council comeback

Former Independent councillor Christy Hyland

FORMER county councillor Christy Hyland will not be running in the upcoming general election but will be seeking re-election to Mayo County Council.

Mr Hyland, who was a councillor for the Westport Local Electoral Area (LEA) between 2014 and 2024, told The Mayo News that he will not contest the general election.

In September, the former garda said he was considering running for the Dáil when asked about his political future.

Speaking more recently, Mr Hyland said he intends to run again in the next local authority elections, which will most likely take place in 2029.

“I’m keeping myself busy with other matters in the community,” said Mr Hyland, who thanked everyone who encouraged him to run for the Dáil.

So far, Fine Gael’s Keira Keogh and Independent Ireland’s Cllr Chris Maxwell are the two main contenders to re-take the seat held by Deputy Michael Ring, who is retiring after 30 years as a TD.

Cllr Maxwell unseated Mr Hyland in the June local elections to become the first and only Independent Ireland member to be elected to Mayo County Council.
