Chambers made up ground on Ciaran Mullooly after the transfer of Niall Blaney's vote
Mayo European election candidate Lisa Chambers has made up some ground on Ciarán Mullooly in the race for a European seat after benefiting from the transfers of party colleague Niall Blaney.
The Fianna Fáil candidate as expected benefitted the most from Blaney's transfers where she received 9,016 out of his 34,074 votes to jump ahead of both Peader Tóibín of Aontú and Sinn Féín's Michelle Gildernew.
However, Chambers is still 12,269 votes behind Independent Ireland candidate Ciarán Mullooly who is on 71,933 votes and is still favourite to take the fifth and final seat.
The 17th count resulted in the elimination of sitting Sinn Féin MEP Chris MacManus whose total vote of 36,157 is now being distributed in the TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar.
It is expected that his party colleague Michelle Gildernew will benefit from the majority of his transfers but she is still 17,830 votes behind Mullooly.
Luke 'Ming' Flanagan is now just 6,864 votes off the quota after received 2,808 votes from Blaney to put him on 106,461. The quota is 113,325 and it is anticipated that Flanagan could be re-elected to the European Parliament after the next count.
Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen received 6,124 from Blaney's transfers to put him onto 84,965 but Fine Gael candidate Nina Carberry was the surprise beneficiary with 4,182 votes going her way. It put the former jockey on 86,268 which put her ahead of her colleague Maria Walsh. The Shrule native received 1,875 votes from Blaney's transfers to put her on 84,935.
Mullooly received 826 votes from Blaney while Gildernew received 974 to put her on 54,103 and Tóibín received 868 to put him on 55,399.
