Louisburgh's Chris Maxwell is just 72 votes short of quota on first count
Independent Ireland candidate Chris Maxwell has topped the poll in the Westport Electoral Area and is on course to be the party's first councillor in Mayo.
The Louisburgh native is just 72 votes short of the quota of 1,865 after picking up 1,793 first preference votes in the first count.
Maxwell came out on top ahead of sitting Fine Gael councillor Peter Flynn who picked up 1,559 and is expected to take the second seat.
There will be a fierce battle for the final two seats with just 166 votes separating the third highest candidate Independent John O'Malley and the sixth highest Keira Keogh of Fine Gael.
O'Malley picked up 1,350 first preference votes followed by Fianna Fáíl councillor Brendan Mulroy with 1,328, Independent councillor Christy Hyland on 1,221 and first time candidate Keogh with 1,184.
The remaining three candidates Karen Gallagher (SF), Peter Nolan (GP) and Niall McCormack (IFP) received 432, 293 and 160 votes and they were all eliminated after the first count.
Their votes are currently being distributed among the remaining candidates.
