What nationwide polls have been suggesting lately has been confirmed so far by what we are seeing in the results for the Mayo Local Election during the first day of counting votes.
"It's a marathon not a sprint" wrote The Mayo News on their Election 2024 Live-Blog. But early tallies from the TF Royal Castlebar strongly indicated that the high hopes that Sinn Féin garnered for a long time will likely be dashed.
For example candidate Donna Hyland in the Castlebar area will be disappointed as the first counts do not give her much reason to believe she will get elected for the Mayo County Council.
On the other hand it was two Independent candidates who topped the votes in their respective electoral areas: Michael Kilcoyne was as easily returned in Castlebar as Patsy O'Brien in Claremorris.
O'Brien said afterwards in an exclusive Mayo News interview: ' I have been very honest with people'. The Robeen-man was followed by fellow Independent Richard Finn on the third count.
Also Ger Deere (Fine Gael) got elected. He came in second behind Kilcoyne in Castlebar on the first count.
The counts are dragging on. Especially Castlebar is taking longer than many would like. First, the counters had to agree upon the handling of disputed votes. Afterwards the third and fourth count did not see anyone getting elected. The clock shows past midnight and only two of seven seats in the Castlebar LEA have been filled.
In total only three councillors out of 30 have been elected during the first day of counting.
The other electoral areas Ballina, Belmullet, Swinford and Westport will be counted on Sunday. The Belmullet count is set to start at 10 a.am.
