At the launch of Independent candidate Chris Maxwell's campaign for the local elections held in Joe Mac’s, a large gathering shared optimism and encouragement about having a representative from Louisburgh back on the Mayo County Council again.

The large gathering listened attentively to community leaders, former councillors, retiring councillors and also the hopeful candidate himself, speaking of the need for a representative from the Louisburgh area.

Tommie Bennet spoke of Maxwell as a strong candidate who is deeply interested in infrastructure and farming locally. He said every vote will be of value and Tommie urged the people to get out and vote.

Former councillor Peter Sweeney said: “We have a chance if everyone gets out and votes, but we need every single vote. This is important for the community. This election is about getting a representative back in the council.”

Another former councillor, Michael Holmes from Tiernaur, spoke of his fondness for Louisburgh and encouraged all the people to come out and vote for Maxwell. He added that Chris will win votes outside the area too because he is involved in many organisations around the county for many years and is well known. He said that if elected, Maxwell should be put on to the Agricultural Committee of the council.

On the agenda for the people of Louisburgh is the completion of the Lough Mask Water Scheme, the Greenway to Louisburgh, Roonagh and the Islands and local roads upgrading. Maxwell and his wife Sally (née Molloy, Glencorrib) and their children Mark, Nicola, Robert and Emma were all in attendance and listened to the concerns of the local electorate. Maxwell ran for Fianna Fail in the 2019 elections and narrowly missed out on winning a seat.
