The town of Westport is in mourning following the death of David McGing, Sandyhill, who passed away peacefully at Mayo Hospice on Thursday, surrounded by his loving family
David died following an illness which he bore with remarkable courage and dignity, supported throughout by his devoted family and the compassionate care of Mayo Hospice staff.
The beloved son of Jim and Celine McGing, David is survived by his heartbroken parents and his three devoted sisters – Naomi, Rachel (and Colin), and Chloe. He was predeceased by his grandparents Brendan and Anne McGing and Peter and Maisie Finn of Oranmore, Galway.
A cherished member of the community
Tributes have poured in from across the community, painting a picture of a young man who touched countless lives through his warmth, spirit, and dedication.
Westport Warriors Basketball Club, where David's mother Celine formerly served as Chairperson, extended their deepest sympathies to the family. "The club would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the family of David McGing on his sad passing, especially to our former Chairperson Celine. May he Rest In Peace," the club stated.
Coláiste Muire, Tuar Mhic Éadaigh, where David was a former student, expressed profound sorrow at the loss of one of their own. In a heartfelt tribute, the school remembered how David immersed himself fully in every aspect of school life during his time there. In 2015, he played the lead role of Danny Zuko in the school's musical production of 'Grease'.

"As a student, David immersed himself fully in every aspect of school life. He was a cherished and beloved member of our school community whose beautiful soul inspired all around him," the school said in a statement. "You will always hold a special place in the heart of the Coláiste Muire community, David."
Funeral arrangements
David will repose at McGing's Funeral Home, Westport, on Sunday, February 15, from 4.30pm until 7pm. The public queue for entry into the funeral home will be from the Shop Street direction.
His Funeral Service will take place at 12 noon on Monday, February 16, at Calvary Church, Distillery Road, Westport, with the funeral proceeding to Aughagower Cemetery.
The family has requested family flowers only. Donations, if desired, may be made to Mayo Hospice at https://www.hospice.ie/donations/donate-online/ or care of McGing Funeral Directors.
David will be greatly missed by his loving family, his aunts, uncles, cousins, grandaunt Una Finn, granduncle Jack Mulchrone, relatives, extended family, neighbours and friends.
