'One of nature's gentlemen' - Mayo choir lead tributes on man's passing

Martin (Mairtín Gibbons), who was part of the Ballintubber Abbey Choir, passed away on Tuesday in Mayo University Hospital.

A leading Mayo choir has led tributes in the wake of the passing of one of the group's longest-serving singers.

Yesterday (Tuesday, September 9), Martin (better known as Máirtín) Gibbons passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family in Mayo University Hospital.

Máirtín left behind a loving and caring circle, including his wife Anne, his siblings Bridie, Martine, and Francis, his extended family, and everyone who knew him from all walks of life.

One of the Creevagh native's biggest passions in life was music, and this shone through in his commitment to the Ballintubber Abbey Choir.

Máirtín was part of the choir since its 2012 inception, and he was ever-present as they provided wonderful musical accompaniment to many an occasion in the area.

The choir paid tribute to one of the cornerstones of their community in a statement on their Facebook page.

"With a wonderful voice and a deep love of music, Máirtín brought joy to countless liturgies, choir gatherings, and celebrations," they wrote.
"Proudly wearing the black suit and red choir tie with the Abbey crest, he was always punctual for choir practice and Mass—something his fellow members fondly teased him about. He especially loved to sing 'This World Is Not My Home' by Jim Reeves, a song that captured both his faith and his gentle spirit.
"Máirtín also contributed to the choir’s CD recording, and he was a regular participant in the Passion Play for many years.
Beyond music, Máirtín’s love for nature and animals, his kindness, and his quiet generosity touched all who knew him. Both he and Anne faithfully dedicated themselves to Adoration at the Abbey, living their faith in a quiet but powerful way."
Máirtín's will repose at the Ballintubber Resource Centre this evening from 5pm to 7pm, with his funeral Mass taking place tomorrow in Ballintubber Abbey at 12 noon tomorrow.
Those wishing to watch the ceremony from afar can do so here. May he rest in peace.
