An Garda Síochána in Mayowere carrying out speed checkpoints on the N5 in Charlestown and detected multiple motorists breaking the speed limit of 100 kilometres per hour
Many were issued with fines and penalty points as a result of the checks. One of the biggest offenders was a driver with 'N' plates clocked travelling at a whopping 150 kilometres per hour.
A second driver was detected travelling at 138 kilometres an hour. Both drivers were fined €160 and issued with three penalty points.
The second driver was also fined €60 for not having a front number plate. In the wake of the checks, Gardaí wish to remind drivers of the specific rules regarding number plates.
The registration plate must consist of black numbers and letters on a white reflective background, and the name of the county of registration in Irish at the top of the plate.
The flag of the European Community must also be present. This is comprised of twelve gold stars in a circle with the letters IRL in white on a blue reflective background. The flag must appear on the left-hand side of the plate.
