Record-breaking barefoot walker Eamonn Keaveney was in Westport today (Thursday, March 5) as he approaches the final stages of his extraordinary 6,000km journey across Europe.
The Claremorris native stopped in Murrisk today where he visited a local school before continuing his journey towards Reek.
Keaveney is now making his way across Mayo towards his hometown of Claremorris, where crowds are expected to gather in the town square at 3pm on Saturday, March 7, to welcome him home after the historic trek.
The 33-year-old set out from Istanbul on March 4 last year with the aim of breaking the world record for the longest barefoot walk. He travelled through Turkey, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Austria, Germany, France, England and Wales before crossing Ireland.
During the challenge, Keaveney ultimately walked more than 6,000km barefoot, surpassing the previous world record distance of 3,409.75km.

The expedition has drawn widespread attention online, with Keaveney documenting his progress throughout the journey on social media while raising funds for Jigsaw and Friends of the Earth Ireland.
Keaveney’s return to Claremorris this weekend will mark the culmination of one of the most remarkable endurance challenges undertaken by a Mayo native, as supporters gather to celebrate the completion of his record-breaking walk.
