Planning application approved by Mayo County Council for major ESB power line upgrade
A planning application approved by Mayo County Council will see enhancements to the existing overhead electricity line in the Claremorris area, aimed at strengthening capacity and improving the reliability of the local power network.
According to the approved planning application, the works will involve a thermal uprating of the full 27.8km Castlebar to Dalton 110kV overhead line circuit.
It also includes upgrades to existing poles and conductors along the route, as part of a wider initiative by Electricity Supply Board (ESB) to modernise infrastructure and support future energy demands in the region.

The planning approval comes at a time of increasing focus on infrastructure investment across the west of Ireland. Mayo residents have previously highlighted the need for robust and reliable energy networks to underpin economic growth, rural jobs and quality of life.
Planning documentation outlines that the upgrade will take place along the established line corridor, impacting numerous townlands, with the removal of old structures and their replacement with new poles and conductors.
ESB has indicated that works will be carried out in line with all environmental and safety standards. Timelines and detailed construction schedules are expected to be published once contractors are appointed.
The decision clears the way for the project to proceed, subject to any conditions attached to the grant of permission.
