The death took place peacefully at the Mayo Hospice in Castlebar of Delia McHugh (née Neary), 54 Balla Road, Claremorris. Delia was a member of a well known family from Claremorris, some of whom put down roots in other parts of the country.
The many tributes to Delia (pictured) since her passing are reflective of the esteem in which she was held by so many around the area. Several have expressed their gratitude to this lovely lady and her welcoming nature and sense of humour. Her husband Frank has been closely associated with parish activities in St Colman’s Church for many years.
Christy Dunne from Mayo Abbey recalled fond memories of Delia from her time working with BCI (Bacon Company of Ireland), Claremorris.
Bridie Mannion said she learned of the passing of Delia with great sadness: “She was one lovely and kind person that always had time for a chat and a nice word for everyone.”
Eleanor Hennelly shared fond memories of a person who always made time for others: “Delia was a fabulous lady, very kind with her ways and words. She was always welcoming and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.”
David Bennett, Convent Road, was among the many joining in the tributes to Delia. “The Neary family were wonderful neighbours to us when we came to Claremorris many years ago. We express our condolences to the Neary and McHugh families on the passing of Delia.
Reposing was in Gilligan’s Funeral Home on St Stephen’s Day and interment took place in the local cemetery following Requiem Mass in St Colman’s Church on Saturday.
Delia, who was predeceased by her parents William and Mary Neary, will be sadly missed by her husband Frank, son Damian, daughter Martina (Delaney), son-in-law Darragh, grandchildren Katie, Aoife and Sarah, her brothers Paddy and Billy, sisters Geraldine and Nuala, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins and extended family, neighbours and many friends.
