Innovative Mayo swap shop highlights sustainable approach to festive season

Community spirit takes centre stage at Kilmaine Christmas Market

Innovative Mayo swap shop highlights sustainable approach to festive season

The village of Kilmaine is preparing to welcome families and neighbours to its annual Community Christmas Market on Sunday, December 14th, with a fresh twist that puts sustainability and community support at the heart of the celebration.

Running from 2 to 5 PM at the Kilmaine Community Centre, this year's free-entry event will feature a novel swap shop organised by the Kilmaine National School Parents' Association, offering families a practical and eco-friendly way to manage the challenges of the festive season.

"Christmas can be a tough time for everyone, and instead of seeing things gather dust, swap them out for new-to-you ones," explained organisers Barry, Michelle, and Roisín, who are spearheading the initiative.

The concept is refreshingly simple: families can drop off gently used children's boots, well-loved books in good condition, and board games that have seen better days. In return, they'll receive tickets that can be exchanged for different items at the market.

The swap shop operates on a ticket-based system with no charges attached. Barry, Michelle, and Roisín are collecting donations every morning through Friday of next week, with pickups available for those who need them.

For anyone who spots something they'd like at the market but doesn't have a ticket, a voluntary contribution bucket will be available on the day, ensuring no one misses out.

Beyond the swap shop, the market promises a full afternoon of festive entertainment. Santa Claus will be on hand for family portraits at €5 per child or €10 per family, while carol singing will provide the seasonal soundtrack.

Local artisans and crafters will display their wares, food vendors will offer seasonal treats, and attendees can enjoy complimentary mulled wine as they browse.

The event represents more than just a Christmas market. It's a celebration of community resourcefulness and mutual support, addressing both environmental concerns and the financial pressures many families face during the holiday season.

By giving pre-loved items a second life, the initiative reduces waste while helping families stretch their budgets further.

Vendors interested in reserving a table for €10 can contact the community centre at 086-3637450 or email kilmainecommunitycentre@gmail.com. The venue is located at Kilmaine Community Centre, Kilmaine, Co. Mayo, F31 RC95.

As the Parents' Association cheerfully notes in their message to the community: "Happy Christmas Everyone!"

It's a sentiment that captures the generous spirit driving this year's market, where the focus extends beyond commercial transactions to genuine community care and environmental responsibility.
