Publican's sudden passing evokes shock in Mayo town

Claremorris publican Jimmy Gallagher RIP

The news of the sudden passing of well known Claremorris publican, Jimmy Gallagher, caused profound sorrow throughout the region last week.

Jimmy took ill and died suddenly at home and the sad tidings sent shockwaves around the town and neighbourhood.

Jimmy, who was in his mid-60s, was synonymous with the bar trade all down the years. He spent his early years in the Beaten Path, Brize, where he quickly became one of the best known members of staff.

Later times saw him launch his own business, The Goat Tavern, in Claremorris, where he again built up a large and loyal clientele.

The Shamrock Bar, formerly PJ Moran’s, became his home after moving from The Goat premises.

Everyone was welcome in the Shamrock Bar and, along with the regular clientele, it also provided a welcome oasis for some people with prevailing worries and emotions that weighed heavy on their shoulders.

The Shamrock provided space and time with friends and colleagues.

Jimmy was a legendary Mayo and Liverpool supporter, organising many buses to Mayo matches in former times and also trips to Anfield.

Local councillor, Richard Finn, a lifelong friend of Jimmy, said Jimmy Gallagher and John Healy (Shamrock Bar) were among two of the finest barmen in the country and were brilliant with customers and friends.

Reposing was at Gilligan’s Funeral Home, on Wednesday evening, and removal from his residence at Lakeview House, Rooskeybeg, on Thursday morning for the funeral Mass in St Colman’s Church at 12 noon, celebrated by Fr Peter Gannon, PP.

This was followed by a private cremation service at Shannon Crematorium.

Jimmy, who was predeceased by his parents Michael and Nancy, his sister Margaret and brothers-in-law Mick Dowd and Liam Hans, is survived by his sons Mikey, Brian and Jamie, his daughter Linda and their mother Mary, his grandchildren Calum, Aoibheann, Darragh, Annie, Ava, Kayla and Chloe, daughters-in-law Michelle and Lisa and Jamie’s partner Ira, son-in-law Steven, his sister Mary (Dowd), brother Tom, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, his friend Sandra, neighbours and a wide circle of friends.
