Mayo can boast another budding future artist, as Daniel Walsh was named as the overall winner in the 16-18 year category of the 2025 Texaco Children’s Art Competition.
The 18-year-old was chosen by a judging panel for his striking pencil sketch of a family friend, simply titled ‘Colm’.

Mr Walsh, who hails from Claremorris, only started to learn how to make his art last Christmas after receiving a Christmas present of graphite pencils and an easel. He will receive a €1,500 prize for his efforts.
Pauline O’Connell, the final adjudicator of the competition, was full of praise for ‘Colm’, labelling the piece as ‘an exceptionally accomplished and delicately rendered portrait of an aged man in pencil. A quiet, contemplative and deeply human artwork that is worthy of the top prize.’
This wasn’t the only Mayo success in the contest. Aoife Corrigan, aged 13, won a Special Merit Award in her age range. The Saint Joseph’s Secondary School, Castlebar, student received rave reviews for her artwork, titled ‘Up Mayo’.

This prize sees her build on her Special Merit Award in 2024.
