Transition Year students from Galway, Mayo and Roscommon will showcase social justice projects and sustainable fashion designs at the Young SVP Youth Day 2026 in Castlebar

Transition Year students from across Mayo, Galway and Roscommon will gather in Castlebar next month for the annual Young SVP Youth Day 2026, a major celebration of youth-led social action in the West.

The event will take place on Thursday, April 16 at the TF Royal Hotel, bringing together students involved in the Young SVP programme, which encourages young people to take action on issues such as poverty, inequality and social exclusion in their communities.

Throughout the day, students will present a wide range of projects focused on supporting vulnerable groups, raising awareness of social challenges, and developing practical solutions to local issues.

A key highlight of this year’s programme will be the “Future Fashion” show, where students will showcase runway outfits designed entirely from discarded textiles sourced from Vincent’s charity shops. The initiative challenges participants to rethink fast fashion and promote sustainability by transforming waste materials into creative designs.

The event will also include performances, panel discussions and interactive sessions, giving students a platform to share their experiences and highlight the impact of their work across the region.

Speaking ahead of the event, Youth Development Officer West Region Helen Ralph said the day recognises the commitment and creativity of young people.

“This day is all about recognising and celebrating the incredible work young people are doing in their communities,” she said. “From social action projects to creative initiatives like Future Fashion, these students are leading the way in building a more just and compassionate society.”

Organisers say the Youth Day has become an important fixture in the school calendar, offering students an opportunity to collaborate, share ideas and showcase the difference they are making locally.

Media are invited to attend the event, which runs on Thursday, April 16 from 10:30am to 2:30pm at the TF Royal Hotel in Castlebar, and will feature both the Future Fashion runway and student-led presentations.
