Rural mobility and transport inequality were placed firmly in the spotlight during a recent visit to Co Mayo by Maria Walsh MEP.

The Midlands-North-West representative met with TFI Local Link Mayo at their offices in Castlebar as part of her constituency tour, where discussions centred on the growing challenges of rural transport and the impact of car dependency on communities.

The meeting highlighted concerns that many rural areas across Mayo face limited public transport options, leaving residents heavily reliant on private cars. This, it was noted, places financial and time pressures on households while also contributing to environmental challenges.

Participants emphasised that access to transport is closely linked to broader social and economic rights, including the ability to remain living in rural communities.

“Mobility is not a privilege, but a fundamental right,” the meeting heard, with a shared view that improved transport options are key to reducing isolation and supporting sustainable rural life.

Speaking after the meeting, Maria Walsh said there is a need to ensure transport systems meet the diverse needs of rural populations.

“Together, we will explore strategies to ensure that rural transport systems meet people’s needs, from affordable public and shared mobility solutions to policies that reduce isolation and strengthen communities,” she said.

Representatives from TFI Local Link Mayo also outlined their submission to a national consultation ahead of Ireland’s upcoming EU Council Presidency in 2026, calling for rural mobility to be prioritised at European level.

They stressed that rural mobility should focus on ensuring people can access services, employment and social opportunities without relying solely on private car ownership.

The visit also included engagement with local stakeholders, including Donna Sheridan and officials from Mayo County Council.

TFI Local Link Mayo said the discussions reaffirm their commitment to working with policymakers to improve transport access and build more connected communities across the county.

The organisation added that continued collaboration at local, national and EU level will be essential to addressing transport poverty and ensuring rural areas are not left behind.
