Cllr Ger Deere has welcomed progress on the demolition of derelict building in Castlebar
The demolition of a derelict building in the centre of Mayo's county town has been welcomed by a Castlebar councillor.
Fine Gael councillor Ger Deere has welcomed progress on a long-derelict building located on Ellision Street in Castlebar which will be developed into accommodation.
Cllr Deere said: “I warmly welcome the demolition of the four derelict units on Ellison Street, which have been an eyesore in the town for far too long. This marks a major step forward in regenerating the heart of Castlebar.
“These buildings have been an eyesore for years and were repeatedly highlighted by councillors, including myself, as among the worst examples of dereliction in the town. Their removal is not only overdue but essential for restoring pride and confidence in our town centre.”

Cllr Deere continued: “This project clears the way for the construction of 13 much needed new homes, including a mix of studio, one bed, two bed and three bed apartments. This is exactly the type of targeted redevelopment Castlebar needs: replacing dereliction with high quality housing, bringing people back into the town centre, and supporting local businesses.

“This project sends a strong message that dereliction will no longer be tolerated. I will continue to push for further action on vacant and neglected buildings and to support initiatives such as the Vacant Above the Shop Grant, which can help breathe new life into our town. I look forward to seeing this site transformed into new homes,” concluded Cllr Deere.
