Construction on a multi-million-euro extension for a Castlebar secondary school will begin in the coming weeks, said Minister of State Alan Dillon TD.

Minister Dillon stated: “I am delighted to receive confirmation from the Department of Education that the two-storey extension at St Gerald’s College, Castlebar, is now in the statutory standstill period following the granting of planning permission. The school has confirmed to the Department that site works will commence shortly.

The works will include four general classrooms, a Construction Studies room with prep area, a Textiles room, a Home Economics room, and a range of ancillary spaces. Minor upgrade works will also be carried out on the existing building.”

Minister Dillon added: “I have been working closely with St Gerald’s College, the Department of Education, and local representatives over recent years to ensure this important project progressed to construction stage. The school community has shown great determination in securing this development, which will significantly expand capacity and modernise the facilities.

“This investment will deliver enormous benefits to the pupils and staff of St. Gerald’s, and to families across Castlebar and the wider community. It reflects our shared commitment to providing students with the best possible learning environment and supporting the future of education in our town.

I want to commend Principal Shaun Burke, the staff, students, and Board of Management for their persistence and dedication. Their efforts have been central to bringing this long-awaited project to this exciting stage.”
