Calls for world-famous rock band Fontaines D.C. to play in Castlebar

World-famous rock band Fontaines D.C. have connections to Mayo

A Castlebar-based politician has proposed that the world-famous rock band Fontaines D.C. perform in Mayo’s county town.

Citing the band’s connection to Castlebar, Cllr Harry Barrett said a Fontaines D.C. concert in the town would ‘draw people from all over Europe’.

The band’s drummer Tom Coll, is a native of Crimlin, outside Castlebar, while their bass guitar player, Conor Deegan, hails from the county town.

Since being formed in 2014, the Grammy-award-winning five-piece band have played to large crowds all over the world. The post-punk band have released four albums and headlined the world-renowned Glastonbury festival in 2024. They have also been tipped to support Oasis - another band with Mayo connections - during their reunion tour later this year.

Cllr Barrett tabled a motion before Wednesday’s meeting of Castlebar Municipal District calling for Mayo County Council to liaise with the band’s management, Castlebar Chamber of Commerce and Connacht GAA to propose ‘ a concert or series of concerts to take place in a suitable local venue, in 2026’.

“It would be a sign that the town is moving on, it’s a positive story, they are a big international act and it would draw people from all over Europe, never mind this country,” the Independent councillor remarked.

He added: “It would be a sign that Castlebar is a modern, thriving town that can hold these events.”

Castlebar is currently home to the TF Royal Theatre, the largest indoor live venue in Connacht. The idea of staging concerts in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, the home of Mayo GAA, has also been mooted publicly in the past.

A spokesperson for Fontaines D.C. said the band are not currently scheduling more headline shows in Ireland.

The band just finished the 2024 leg of their “Romance” tour with two nights at the 3Arena in Dublin.
