The EU are now taking measures to cut the amount of electrical waste, with one of these measures being all new electronic gadgets will take the same charger.
So what will this look like?
All new smartphones, tablets and other electronic gadgets will come with something called a USB C charging port - i.e, where you plug your charger in.
It is a positive for consumers as it means you will only need one type of cable to charge all devices and as well as this, it is reversible in the sense that the plug itself will be USB C connectable on both ends - the side that goes into your phone is identical to the one that goes into the plug in the wall.
The rectangular one you would normally see now, USC A, has been around for almost 30 years and is going to be phased out and replaced by USB C.
In a practical sense, not only will the new cable charge up the power of your devices - even laptops! - it will have other uses such as the ability to connect devices directly to one another, such as an iPad to a digital camera, or multiple monitors to computers.
"The one wire does all is essentially the goal," Business journalist Adam Maguire said.
Mr Maguire said that by the EU introducing this common standard law for electronics, it was "really a game changer", because it made other countries review their own laws and follow suit.
"The tide was turning and it was clear what way the wind was blowing and so after more than 20 years of companies such as Apple having their own charger type, this is the first time now that apple has got on board with what everyone else is doing."
The argument for bringing in the USB C was that it would save Europeans money as there is an estimate €250m spent on unnecessary charger accessories each year.
Chargers also represented around 11,000 tonnes of waste per annum. "The hope is that having the common standard now will reduce waste as there will be no need to dump chargers," Mr Maguire said.
