Mayo boxer Shannon Sweeney, the 2024 European champion, will fight for a spot in the final at the National Elite Championship tonight.

The athlete from St Anne's BC in Westport is set to face Daina Moorehouse at 6.30pm this evening.

Sweeney defeated Rachel Lawless quarter-final last Friday (January 9). She now faces the stiffest challenge in the Paris Olympian and current 51kg National Elite Champion.

The fact that Moorehouse, who hails from Enniskerry BC in Wicklow, has beaten Sweeney on four occasions shows a difficult task ahead for the Mayo athlete.

There is a lot at stake tonight when the two lock horns in the National Stadium in Dublin. The winner will advance to the final and get a chance to win the title of National Elite Champion.

However, this semi-final is also a fight for crucial funding. Whoever qualifies for the final will receive essential supports from Sport Ireland.

Sweeney is the last Mayo boxer left in the competition. Carlagh Peake from Ballyhaunis lost her 51kg quarter-final last week against Niamh Early from Unit 3 BC in Kildare.

And Castlebar BC's Rasheed Momoh lost his 85kg quarter-final to Nathan Ojo from Esker BC in Dublin.
