Carlagh Peake, along with Natalia Fasciszewska and Cliona Darcy, were part of the Irish team in Girdwood Community Hub in Belfast
The eyes of the Mayo’s boxing brotherhood was on Girdwood Community Hub as some of the best boxers associated with the county were part of a delegation at an event drawing together some of the best punchers in the land.
The three-day event in Belfast brought together boxers from Ireland, England, Hungary, and Lithuania to compete in a series of well-contested bouts.
Among the delegation in Green were Cliona D’Arcy, Natalia Fasciszewska, and Carlagh Peake.
Natalia Fasciszewska was one of the trident of Mayo representatives, and faced off against Keira Bowden in the 57 kg weight division.
The fight was keenly contested, and the judges had a hard time determining the victor in the keenly contested tie.
However, in the end, the scorecards were narrowly against Castlebar woman Fasciszewska, who was edged 3-2.
On Day Two, though, she really showed her class against another Hungarian, Panna Hippeller, and recorded a dominant 5-0 victory.
Day Three saw Castlebar’s best go toe-to-toe with Lithuania’s Vitle Savickaite. Fasciszewska brought about the stoppage early doors in Round Two, sealing a remarkable end to a great weekend.
Carlagh Peake, from Ballyhaunis Boxing Club, represented her club, county, and country in the 50 kg weight division. Peake took on Hungarian puncher Petra Mezei and was rampant in the Day Two encounter, winning all five rounds.
On Day Three, in the Ireland v Ulster series, a thrilling exhibition saw Carlagh Peake v Carleigh Irving square off for five rounds of exceptional fare.
Clíona Darcy may box for Tobar Pheadair in Galway, but she heralds her Mayo lineage. Her grandfather, Tom Murray, is a proud Coguala native, which is just outside Westport, and she has done her family proud so far, in particular in her exploits in securing a World Youth Heavyweight title.
Her performances in Belfast were spellbinding. First, she downed Zsofia Szira on Friday, before repeating the trick on Day Two against the same Hungarian opposition in the 80+ kg division.
On Sunday, she made it a hat-trick, dominating Szira once more to win 15 rounds from 15 in the one weekend.
An exceptional talent, no doubt, and an exceptional weekend for Mayo boxing.
