RIP: Mayo island mourns passing of John Walsh in his 101st year

Much-loved Achill family man remembered for long life and strong community ties

The late John Walsh, Cashel, Achill, who passed away peacefully in his 101st year.

There is widespread sadness in Achill Island following the passing of John Walsh, Cashel, Achill, who died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, in his 101st year.

Originally from Dungloe in Co Donegal and having spent time living in Scotland, Mr Walsh lived his later years in Achill and celebrated his 100th birthday with his family, friends and neighbours last August.

Predeceased by his beloved wife Bridgie and daughter Rosaleen, he is deeply mourned by his children Phil, Kay Cafferkey, Jackie Lyons, Gerry Gallagher and Pat, as well as his extended family.

He will also be fondly remembered by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, along with neighbours and friends who knew him as a gentle and devoted family man.

Mr Walsh will repose at Lavelle’s Funeral Home (F28 Y0H9) in Cashel, Achill on Friday, March 27 from 5pm to 7pm, before removal to the Church of the Assumption in Dookinella.

Funeral Mass will take place on Saturday at 11am, followed by burial in Slievemore Cemetery.

The Walsh family has requested privacy at this time, with family flowers only. Donations, if desired, can be made to St Fionnan's Community Nursing Unit.

His passing marks the end of a long life well lived, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the Achill community.
