A WELL-known Mayo funeral directors have applied for planning permission to develop a new purpose built funeral home adjacent to the community hospital in Belmullet.

McDonnell Funeral Directors in Belmullet have sought planning permission for a single storey funeral home on a 0.4 hectare site located on the Hospital Road in Belmullet.

The plans for the new funeral home which will have a floor area of new 406 square metres include a one-way covered walkway to the main repose area as well as a secondary repose area and coffin display along with an entryway and seating area. The proposed building will also consist of an embalming room, office and meeting room, kitchenette, print room, male and female toilets and hearse and coffin storage.

The proposed entrance to the site will be off the current access road for the Belmullet Community Hospital while the car park will have capacity for up to 50 vehicles.

McDonnell Funeral Directors is a family-run business operated by brothers Seán and Padraic Conroy and the current funeral home is located on Barrack Street in Belmullet.
