Shane Moran will run 10k every day in February to support North West STOP
A Mayo man is taking on a personal fundraising challenge to support families across the who have been deeply affected by the loss of loved ones in recent years. Shane Moran will be running 10k every day in February to raise funds for North West STOP, supporting suicide prevention services across the West.
Shane Moran, from Glenamoy, said his motivation comes from seeing first-hand the heartbreak experienced by families and communities across Mayo, where sudden and tragic losses have left a lasting impact.
“In recent years, far too many families have faced heartbreak, and these losses don’t just affect individuals — they leave a mark on entire communities,” he said. “No one should have to face those struggles alone.”

Mr Moran is raising funds and awareness for North West STOP, a suicide prevention and counselling service that provides free, confidential support with no waiting lists to people in crisis across Mayo and the wider North West. The organisation offers immediate access to counselling, ensuring people can get help when they need it most, rather than waiting weeks or months.
He described the service as a “lifeline” for those struggling with grief, trauma and mental health challenges, noting that its work helps individuals find hope again, supports families through loss and plays a crucial role in helping communities heal.
“I’m fundraising because I want to do something meaningful,” Mr Moran explained. “Something that supports people who are hurting, something that helps prevent future tragedies, and something that gives back to a service that has already helped so many.”
The fundraising challenge is also aimed at increasing awareness around mental health supports available locally, particularly in rural areas such as Erris, where access to services can be limited.
Mr Moran said standing behind organisations like North West STOP is vital for Mayo communities. “Their work makes a real difference. This is my way of showing support, raising awareness and letting people know that help is there.”
Further details of Shane Moran’s fundraising challenge and how to support the campaign are expected to be shared locally in the coming weeks.
