GARDAÍ in Mayo are investigating the death of a man who died after he got into difficulty while swimming off Achill Island yesterday evening.

The incident occurred yesterday evening (Monday) when a man aged in his 70s got into difficulty while swimming off Keel beach shortly before 6pm and was taken from the water by a member of the public.

The scene was attended by a local doctor who performed CPR on the casualty while a defibrillator was also used to try and revive him.

Members of the Achill Coast Guard unit were also tasked to attend the scene and the Sligo-based Coast Guard emergency helicopter arrived on the beach at around 6.25pm.

The emergency services continued to treat the casualty and he was airlifted from Keel beach at 6.40pm and brought to Mayo University Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The Coroner of Mayo was notified of his death and a post mortem is to take place to determine the cause of death.

It is understood that the casualty was holidaying on Achill and was on his own at the time of the incident. Gardaí said that investigations are ongoing and a file will be prepared for the Coroner.
