Up to 1,800 runners descended on Mayo island for the sold-out 20th anniversary celebrations

The 20th annual Achill Half Marathon and 10k races came to a thrilling conclusion on Saturday on Achill Island, marking two decades of outstanding athleticism, community spirit, and breathtaking coastal scenery. Organised by a dedicated voluntary committee, the milestone event brought together runners from across Ireland and around the globe for a day of unforgettable racing and celebration.

Despite the familiar Achill mist and breeze it was perfect running conditions for the more than 1,800 enthusiastic participants who took to the rugged roads and dramatic landscapes of Achill Island, creating a vibrant and electric atmosphere. The event welcomed runners of all levels—from elite athletes to recreational runners—all united in their love of the sport and the striking backdrop it unfolded against.

TV and Radio Presenter Brendan Courtney returned once again to officially start the races. Brendan, who first discovered running during the Covid-19 pandemic, has become a familiar face at the event and shared his delight at being part of this special 20th anniversary edition.

This year’s event was proudly supported by Westnet, the main sponsor. A locally based broadband and telecommunications provider, Westnet has long championed community initiatives across the west of Ireland. Their generous support played a vital role in ensuring the success of this year’s races. The Achill Half Marathon and 10k Committee is deeply grateful for Westnet’s commitment to fostering connection, both through technology and through meaningful engagement with local events like ours.

Widely regarded as one of Ireland’s most scenic and challenging races, the Achill Half Marathon and 10k offered runners a demanding course through rolling hills and along the island’s stunning Atlantic coastline. The route delivered both physical tests and visual rewards, making it a true highlight on the Irish running calendar.

Half Marathon Results
In the men’s half marathon, George Snee claimed first place with an impressive time of 1:12:45.

He was followed by James Moran at 1:16:23, and John Anderson in third with 1:19:21
In the women’s division, Caitlin Billman took top honors, finishing in 1:26:11, followed by Joan Kinsella at 1:28:24, and Monica Holmes at 1:31:42.

10k Results
The 10k race also delivered excitement, with Shane Begley first across the line with a time of 36:35 followed by Brian Sexton and Johnny Heeks with times of 38:26 and 38:38, respectively.
Among the women, Becky Coughlan led the pack with a time of 43:42, followed by Karen Nolan at 44:46, and Rhona Dempsey at 45:20.

The first Achill residents to cross the Half Marathon finish line were brother and sister duo John and Claire McNamara, Keel and for the 10k the first Achill residents home were Pete Gallagher, Valley and Maeibh McNamara, Achill Sound, drawing cheers from the proud local crowd.

The Achill Half Marathon and 10k Committee extends heartfelt congratulations to every participant for their incredible effort and perseverance. Their energy and dedication continue to inspire, and their presence made this 20th anniversary race an occasion to remember.

Chairperson Patricia Joyce remarked: “Celebrating 20 years of this event is a true testament to the power of community. This achievement belongs to every runner, volunteer, sponsor, and supporter who has played a part in our journey. We are deeply grateful.”

Chris McCarthy, Manager of Achill Tourism, added: “This event showcases everything special about Achill—our landscape, our hospitality, and our amazing community spirit. The economic and social impact of the Half Marathon and 10k is enormous, and we thank all those who helped make this year’s milestone event such a success, it wouldn’t be possible without the huge community involvement. The atmosphere today was electric, and we’re so proud to share our island with the world.”

As the 20th edition of the Achill Half Marathon and 10k comes to a close, runners and supporters depart with lasting memories and a shared sense of accomplishment. The committee is already looking forward to the 21st race in 2026, with plans to continue evolving and enhancing this celebrated event.

Achill Half Marathon and 10k is a volunteer-led initiative committed to promoting fitness, well-being, and community through sport. Since its inception in 2005, the event has grown into one of Ireland’s most iconic races.
