‘The Messages’ initiative will promote sustainable food systems through community-led climate action

The Mary Robinson Centre has announced the launch of ‘The Messages’, a new women-led, all-island climate initiative that aims to strengthen sustainable food systems and encourage community action on climate change.

The project is being delivered in partnership with Hinterland CLG, Project Dandelion and artist Victoria McCormack, alongside Northern Ireland partners the Women’s Resource Development Agency, Studio Idir and Brink.

The Messages is one of 11 projects to receive funding under the Creative Ireland Creative Climate Action Fund III.

Named after the familiar Irish expression for “the groceries”, the project will explore Ireland’s shared food culture and encourage communities to rethink how food is grown, shared and valued.

A key feature of the initiative will be the training of Creative Food Facilitators – women who will work alongside climate experts, artists, scientists and growers to inspire practical climate action through shared meals, food exchanges and community food initiatives.

The project aims to reduce food waste, improve access to seasonal produce and develop community-led models that can be replicated across the island, helping to build long-term resilience while encouraging sustainable everyday habits.

Describing the initiative as “creative climate action you can taste, share and grow”, organisers hope ‘The Messages’ will bring communities together through food while supporting meaningful action on climate change.
