A planning application has been lodged with Mayo County Council for significant extensions and modifications to The Merry Monk, Ballina.
The proposed development includes removing the flat roof from the existing single-storey annex and building a ground-floor extension. A new upper floor will be constructed above the existing single-storey building to create an extension comprising 10 guest bedrooms, along with associated reception, circulation, and storage areas.
Permission is also sought to cover and screen an existing external fire escape staircase. The extended ground floor will include a shop unit with a shopfront for use as an off-licence. The application also includes changes to site services, external signage, and a revised site boundary.

Additionally, parking requirements for the development indicate a total of 13 spaces - 11 of which are for guests and staff, alongside two for the off-license.
The application was submitted by Ashbourne Pubs Ltd and is currently under review, with a decision expected by mid-February in the new year.
