Mayo will bring the magic of Christmas to homes across the country, through TG4’s Geantraí na Nollag, as it celebrates almost 30 years as one of Ireland’s most renowned traditional music series.
Filmed in the picturesque Mount Falcon Estate, near Ballina, the Christmas Special marks both a milestone anniversary for Geantraí and season 20 of the programme.
Hosting the evening is Pauline Scanlon, guiding viewers through a festive feast of performances steeped in tradition and seasonal reflection.
Among the headline moments is a rare and intimate appearance by folk icon Paul Brady, who delivers definitive renditions of Arthur McBride and The Lakes of Pontchartrain. These songs have long held a place in Ireland’s musical canon.
Mayo’s influence runs strongly throughout the programme. Westport-born harper Laoise Kelly joins Kerry singer and accordion player Breanndán Ó Beaglaoich for a performance of Don Oíche Úd i mBeithil, blending harp, song and storytelling in a way that echoes centuries of Irish tradition. Now based on Achill Island, Kelly’s playing resonates powerfully in a county where the harp tradition continues to thrive.
From Bonniconlon, concertina player Aileen Bourke represents the next generation of North Connacht musicians. A multiple All-Ireland champion, Bourke brings precision, lift and youthful energy to the Geantraí stage, accompanied by guitarist Pat Doucey.

Another Mayo highlight comes from the Mayo Ensemble, a youth orchestra led by internationally renowned multi-instrumentalist and dancer Stephen Doherty. Comprising talented young musicians from across the county, the ensemble delivers a thrilling, full-bodied sound that celebrates creativity, collaboration, and the enduring appeal of traditional music for young people.
Rising Mayo stars Seoda also feature, bringing their award-winning energy and intricate arrangements to a national audience. Winners of the prestigious Siansa competition, the eight-piece ensemble exemplifies the depth of talent emerging from the county’s sessions, schools and communities.
Elsewhere, viewers will enjoy performances from some of Ireland’s best-loved voices, including Tommy Fleming and Conal Early. Gearóid McCarthy, alongside Fergal Scahill and Ciarán Mulderrig, delivers powerful storytelling through song, while award-winning harpist and Mayo composer Alannah Thornburgh brings her distinctive modern voice to the tradition.
The programme closes with the Brennan Sisters from Conamara, whose harmonies on Song for a Winter’s Night and I Will Love You provide a fitting end to a night of reflection and celebration.
The show will air on Christmas Day at 7pm on TG4.
