Mayo musician Liam Geddes looking forward to Electric Picnic

The Ballina man on how he missed the once in a lifetime opportunity to see one of the great bands

Mayo musician Liam Geddes looking forward to Electric Picnic

AN EVENT that will be marked red in many calendars, Electric Picnic is a place for music enthusiasts and professionals alike. Mayo man Liam Geddes is one of them.

The music producer might spend most of the time in London, but EP is way up there for him: “I’ve been going every year for a while now, probably hitting that age where I’m kind of like, I don’t know how many more years I could probably do this,” Liam laughs. “EP is definitely something I plan on going to every year and the line-up is always great.”

Obviously, an event like EP depends on a good line-up, and in Liam’s opinion, this year’s artists are worth the visit: “The main stage looks pretty great, Chappell Roan is going to be unreal. I’m very much looking forward to Sam Fender as well. Kings of Leon obviously is going to be great. And Hozier, it’s been ages since I’ve seen him live.”

Useful advice, especially for first time EP goers, is definitely set an alarm if you’re going to take a little nap, as Geddes once painfully experienced himself: “I went back to the tent for a little nap, and then I woke up to the riff of an Arctic Monkeys song playing. I jumped up, ran up to the stage and I caught the last five minutes. That was it, never got a chance to see that band again, that chance is passed now.”

Another piece of advice would be: The Electric Picnic app. According to Geddes it’s a great feature to plan which acts you’d want to see, when and where.

You can set reminders because sometimes a lot of the acts will be clashing so you’ll have one act on at six o’clock and then you’ll have one a quarter past six in the opposite end of the festival. Having a plan is good but also, experienced festival goer Liam knows: “Go with the flow.”

Geddes, will be known to many for his participation at Eurovision 2024, as he co-wrote “Hollow,” Latvia’s entry for Eurovision 2024, which got 64 points in the Grand Final and finished in 16th place. This year, he was part of the Irish Eurovision duty. And more recently, Geddes received a gold standard for a K-Pop single in Japan.

How to camp at Electric Picnic?

FOR music professionals, EP can be a valuable occasion to meet exciting new talent on the smaller stages.

“I met an artist called Khaki Kid, who was performing on one of the smaller stages a few years ago and I just loved what he did and then I reached out and we did a track together and it’s been really successful in terms of like TV placements and so on. That’s kind of happened a number of times.”

To round off a good EP experience, camping obviously is an important issue. Liam Geddes chose the Pink Moon camping option, which offers pre-pitched tents and a bit more luxurious stay for the weekend.

These ones have to be acquired in advance, of course. But at least, they seem way more attainable than Oasis tickets, which passed Liam by.

“When I entered the queue for their tickets, I saw, oh, I’m at position 40 40 000, not bad. So I left it kind of going then for a couple of hours in the queue. And then I looked at it again, and was like ‘oh wait a minute’, it wasn’t 40,000, but it was 400,000, nearly half a million people were queuing up, it’s was crazy.”
