The official sod turning to mark the construction of the Crossmolina Flood Relief Scheme in north Mayo will take place next Friday.

Independent TD and Minister of State for the OPW with Special Responsibility for Flood Relief, Kevin 'Boxer' Moran will travel to north Mayo on Friday, March 7 to officially turn the sod on the Crossmolina Flood Relief Scheme.

The start of the construction phase of the €13.5 million scheme began in December after it was given the go ahead almost nine years after Crossmolina was left devastated when floods of water flowed through the town after the River Deel burst its banks.

The scheme is expected to protect 116 properties in the town that have been repeatedly subject to flood risk, putting personal safety and livelihoods at risk.

Mayo Fine Gael TD and Minister of State Alan Dillon is pleased to confirm the visit of Minister Moran to Crossmolina for the event will take place adjacent to the newly established site offices at 11.30am.

Minister Dillon emphasised the significance of this multi-million euro project for the residents, businesses, and the broader community of Crossmolina.

“The River Deel Flood Relief Scheme is a critical infrastructure project that will provide much-needed protection against flooding, ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. This initiative will not only safeguard homes and businesses but also foster economic growth and improve the quality of life for the people of Crossmolina.

“While we have been frustrated with delays, this is an important milestone as we enter the construction phase. The River Deel Flood Relief Scheme construction represents a significant step towards mitigating flood risks in the town by investing in a sustainable and long-term solution that will future-proof the town, ensuring it remains a safe and thriving community for generations to come,” said Minister Dillon.
