ON Saturday afternoon, some of Mayo’s brightest sporting talents secured more glory, although on this occasion, it was for Team Ireland at the Cross Country Championships.

Freya and Holly Renton were part of the Irish team that competed in Bangor, Wales over the weekend.

In warm weather conditions, the talented Westport twins helped Ireland secure a silver medal in the 4040m event.

In the Intermediate girls category, Team England just got the better of Team Ireland and the Renton duo who are students at Sacred Heart School in Westport.

In the individual heats, Freya Renton ran well to finish third and claim a bronze medal.

There was more Mayo representation across the weekend as Roxanne Sands from St Joseph’s School in Castlebar competed in the 3200m event in the Junior Girls category. Roxanne helped the team to a well-deserved bronze medal after a strong finish.

In the 4040m event in the Junior Boys category, Donncha Walsh from Rice College Westport also represented Team Ireland as they narrowly missed out on a bronze medal finishing just behind a strong Welsh team.
