Mayo AC runners finish off 2025 in style with impressive times in Athenry

Mayo AC’s first four finishers at the Fields of Athenry 10k on St Stephen’s Day L-R: John Brennan, Gerry Kirrane, Sean Hynes, Tony O’Malley.

In its 24 year anniversary of the Fields of Athenry 10k, a large crowd gathered with over 2,300 competitors present. Despite chilly conditions at the start, runners were soon warmed up and there was some red hot racing in the Galway area.

For the first time ever the event featured cash prizes for the top three men and women finishers, bringing an extra spark of competition to the day. The Race winner was Jamie Fallon Craughwell AC who finished in a time of 30:34, repeating his victory in 2024 which saw him coming home at exactly the same time.

The first woman was Ava Crean from Back to Boston Running Club who finished in a time of 33:40 : she won the National Marathon in Dublin in October.  And she set a new women’s course record, beating the time set by Aoife Kilgallon of Sligo AC in 2022 by nine seconds.

The men’s course record holder is still held by Hugh Armstrong from Ballina AC 29:32 who set that time in 2019.

In the high quality event, eight Mayo AC finishers ran brilliantly with quite a few well up among age category results. Sean Hynes S was their first man home in an excellent 34:56, while finishing 28th overall.

He was followed by Tony O’Malley M50 who finished in 37:48, Gerry Kirrane M40 38:57, John Brennan M40 41:11, Ray Clarke M50 43:18, Dee Corcoran F50 44:57, Mary Browne F60 52:07, and Caitlin Woods F50 who finished in a time of 52:48.
