Mayo's rising athletics star Freya Renton added yet another gold medal to her ever-growing collection as she powered home to victory at the Tailteann Games.

Renton, who runs for Sacred Heart School and was representing Connacht, beat the chasing pack in the girls' 3,000-metre race at the South-East Technological University Campus in Carlow.

It was a glorious day for racing, and Freya, who is tipped to become a top-class athlete, put in a suitably glorious performance to match, edging Saint Mary's New Ross athlete Emma Hickey.

Her time of 9 minutes, 32.03 seconds was marginally enough to edge a thrilling race, with Hickey a mere 0.81 seconds behind her Mayo adversary.

In an unsurprising turn of events, Freya's twin sister Holly also secured a spot on the podium, taking home the bronze medal with a time of 10 minutes, 0.22 seconds, comfortably ahead of fourth-placed finisher Emily Morris.
