LIVE: Track the path of Storm Éowyn as Met Eireann status red warnings take effect

Caution urged amid potential 'danger to life' in Mayo and across the country

Met Éireann has issued a series of warnings ahead of the arrival of Storm Éowyn which could be one of the most destructive storms ever seen in Ireland.

Status red wind warnings have been issued for EVERY county in Ireland with the first taking effect at 2am on Friday and the last remaining valid until 2pm.

For Mayo, a status orange wind warning will be in place from midnight until 4pm on Friday while a highest-level status red wind warning will be in effect between 4am and 12 midday on Friday.

Schools, creches and colleges will remain closed on Friday and all public services, including public transport will NOT operate while status red warnings are in place.

Mayo County Council says its offices will remain closed on Friday and that crews are on standby and will be deployed once it is deemed safe to do so.

“Our local authority roads crews are on standby to respond to issues that may arise but only when it is safe to do so after the expiration of the red weather warning,” said a council spokesperson.

“The public are reminded to stay indoors for the duration of the red warning and are also asked to be mindful that a status orange wind warning will also be in effect for Mayo until 4pm on Friday, January 24 and to be conscious that the impacts of the storm may take some time to be addressed. Strong winds may lead to fallen trees, branches and debris on the roads making journeys extremely hazardous," they added.
