Families are invited to enjoy Easter activities at the National Museum of Ireland at Turlough Park

Families across Co. Mayo are being encouraged to make the most of the Easter break with a visit to the National Museum of Ireland at Turlough Park, where a wide range of free activities and attractions are on offer.

A series of free Easter-themed art and craft workshops will take place, led by artist Isolde Dingerkus on March 31 and April 1, with multiple morning sessions available.

Additional eco-themed workshops, focusing on creativity and sustainability, will be delivered by Museum Educator Fiona Deacy on April 8 and 9, including guided nature walks and hands-on craft activities.

Inside the museum, visitors can explore award-winning galleries featuring interactive elements for younger audiences, including activity trails and a dedicated children’s corner.

Among the highlights is “Beir Bua,” an Alaskan brown bear exhibit on loan from the museum’s natural history collection, which has proven especially popular with visitors.

Another key attraction is “The Murmur of Bees,” an exhibition showcasing the importance of Ireland’s bee species, complete with a live viewing area of a rooftop hive.

Outdoors, families can take part in the Woodland Explorer nature trail, designed to engage children with the natural surroundings through fun activities. The grounds also link to a 10km Greenway connecting Turlough Park to Lough Lannagh, offering an additional option for cycling and walking.

Located on a scenic 30-acre estate in Castlebar, the site combines a museum, historic Victorian Gothic house, landscaped gardens, woodland playground and access to a popular Greenway route, making it an ideal day trip for families.

Admission to the museum and grounds is free, though advance booking is required for workshops via the museum’s website.
