Mayo men create history as GAA try out new rules in Croke Park

Aidan O'Shea scores football's first four-pointer
MAYO'S Aidan O'Shea and Jack Carney wrote their names in Irish sporting history this evening when he scored the first goal under the proposed new ruled for Gaelic football. The Breaffy man blasted the ball low to the net in the opening moments of the Inter-Provincial clash between Connacht and Leinster and therefore recorded the first-ever four-pointer in the the history of the game.
A few minutes later, Kilmeena's Jack Carney kicked the first point from outside the 40-metre arc and etched his name in history because the score yielded two points for Connacht rather than one. Kicks from outside the new arc which travel over the bar and between the posts are worth two points under the new rules.
Connacht won the game easily on a 4-21 to 1-11 scoreline with Aghamore's Fergal Boland also getting on the scoresheet. Six Mayo men got to experience the action with Diarmuid Duffy, Eoghan McLaughlin and Bob Tuohy also getting on the pitch as the men from the west qualified for tomorrow night's final.
