Mayo club appoint John Maughan as their new manager
Former Mayo GAA manager and Crossmolina boss John Maughan takes up intriguing new role
John Maughan has had a wide and wonderful football career and this morning he has set off on another great adventure.
The Crossmolina man won two Connacht Championships with the Mayo Minors and a Hogan Cup with Carmelite College in Moate. He went on to become a key member of the Mayo team which won the All-Ireland U-21 title in 1983 before winning a Connacht senior championship in his first year with the Mayo seniors in 1985.
Unfortunately injury curtailed his inter-county playing career after that.
At club level, he played in an All-Ireland Club Final with Castlebar Mitchels in 1994, but it was on the sideline that he would make his most telling contributions.
He took over as Clare manager and guided The Banner to their historic win over Kerry in the 1992 Munster Final. He took the Mayo role in 1995 and guided the Green and Red to All-Ireland finals in 1996 and ‘97. His next inter-county role was as manager of Fermanagh before returning to Mayo where he led the team to the National League title and another All-Ireland final in 2004.
He went on to manage Roscommon and later Offaly, making him the first man to manage at inter-county level in the four provinces.
At club level he led Crossmolina to the 2003 All-Ireland club final and later guided Lahardane to the Connacht Junior title in 2017.
In recent years he has been an integral part of Brian Benson’s management team in Crossmolina as the Deel Rovers captured the All-Ireland Intermediate title and re-established themselves as one of the power-houses of Mayo club football.
Now, Maughan has taken on a new challenge. He is the new manager of Parke as the Black and Amber look to prepare for the 2027 intermediate championship. Maughan will take charge of the very talented outfit who annually fail to make a meaningful championship impression. The West Mayo side have a top-quality squad with numerous players having come through the underage ranks with Mayo. The arrival of Maughan is sure to make next season a hugely intriguing one for the young men in black and amber.
