A strong first half performance from Fearghal Hoban and Kieran Gibbons’ Islandeady side saw them prevail as they booked their spot in the quarter finals after a hard-fought victory in South Mayo over a Kilmaine side who simply missed too many chances.
In the early stages, Kilmaine enjoyed the majority of the possession as Hugh O’Loughlin impressed around the middle. However three two pointers from Levi Barrett, Darragh Joyce and Zac Collins had the West Mayo men right in the contest.
With 17 minutes on the clock, Ryan McNamara found the net for Islandeady and just five minutes later, they were in dreamland when Zac Collins tapped to the net from close range.
Kilmaine who were playing against the wind in the opening half battled well as Hugh O’Loughlin, Luke Muniz and Adam Barrett all pointed. However at the break, it was Islandeady who led 2-8 to Kilmaine’s 0-7.
Kilmaine attacker Adam Barrett kicked 1-7 in the second half but it wasn't enough as Islandeady dug deep. The West Mayo men led throughout the second half while Barrett had the gap down to just three in injury time after he hit to the net from a penalty kick.
In the closing stages, the prominent Darragh Joyce added a third major for Islandeady and the roars could be heard loud and clear in the South Mayo air.
Kilmaine who kicked numerous wides see their season end as they finish in third position above Kiltimagh. Islandeady are now through to the quarter finals where they will have a game away from home after Ardnaree secured top position in the group.
