After 75 long years of hurt we’ve won Sam Maguire

AND so it came to be. On an overcast evening in Dublin the dreams of a mighty race of people finally were realised.

The people of the green above the red - the men and women of the western shore who never stopped believing, were finally given the ticket to immortality.

After 27, 334 days in the land of never, Mayo finally took their place among the greats once again.

Seamus O’Malley, Gerald Courell, Josie Munelly, Sean Flanagan, Padraic Carney and all their mighty colleagues were leaning over Heaven’s grandstand long before the end, willing the young men in the gleaming white jerseys to join them on the winners’ rostrum.

Andy Moran’s mighty young men diced with death in the first half, looked like winners in the second, were pinned back, but they never changed their sense of wild adventure and hope.

It’s the way we have lived on the west coast of our island since the dawn of time.

No matter what has been thrown at us, we never stopped believing and now we’re champions of Ireland again.

It has been a long, lone wait but it it has been worth it.
